folxlore by ben Hausman

folxlore was written for my friends in folx Percussion, a percussion collective founded by Kendall Rhymer and McKenzie Squires. Their mission is to create a safe and positive environment for an all female and non-binary percussion group where its members are free to create music and explore the unconventional. The base instrumentation: glockenspiel and metal pipes, was inspired by some of the projects they have worked on together.

folxlore (pronounced folklore) is a love letter to queer experimentation. I spent some time recently reflecting on the explorative nature of online queer spaces, often trying out new terms and ideas that will inevitably receive backlash until concepts fully become mainstream. Just like how non-binary identities are so new, everything had to come from somewhere, and fortunately our small queer culture is still so young (though at the same time dating back to the beginning of time). For now and forever while we find new ideas and new terms, may we always love and remember our folxlore.
