Viola, Two Percussionists, and Electronics

ᕈǝⱯ₵Ɛ was inspired by the news coverage of student protests from the civil rights era to the 2023 and 2024 Palestinian/Israeli protests. While going through this footage, I was struck by the repetitive nature of institutional responses towards student protesters throughout history. Specifically, the juxtaposition of statements released by institutions regarding student protesting and the actions taken by these same institutions when students protest. This dichotomy is heard through the calm, beginning of the work that includes audio snippets of the importance of student protest, and the second half of the work which is violent, aggressive, chaotic, and includes institutions’ responses to student protest.
